Mission

UW-Barron County (UW-BC) is one of 13 freshman/sophomore campuses of the University of Wisconsin Colleges awarding the Associate of Arts and Science degree.  The UW Colleges provides the first two years of a liberal arts general education that is accessible and affordable, prepares students for success at the baccalaureate level of education, and prepares students for lifelong learning, leadership, service and responsible citizenship.

Enrollment

Approximately 500 full- and part-time students from over 60 high schools in a ten county area, 20% are adults returning to school.

2008-2009 Tuition and Fees
* Full-time Wisconsin residents pay $2,346 per semester (12-18 credits).
* Part-time students pay $195 per credit (1-11 credits).
* Textbooks are rented rather than purchased, saving hundreds of dollars per year.
* Grants, loans and on-campus employment are available to eligible students which help cover both educational and living expenses.  A convenient partial payment plan helps students by spreading out payments over the semester.

The Campus

UW-BC is nestled along the winding Red Cedar River on approximately 110 acres of partially wooded land. Six buildings comprise the campus including a gymnasium and Fine Arts Building. All buildings are handicapped accessible.

In fall 2006, the extensive $6.4 expansion and renovation project was completed.  The new construction updated and connected Meggers Hall with Ritzinger Hall.  Expanded and renovated facilities include all state-of-the-art science laboratories, high-tech classrooms, and comfortable student activity spaces.

Other educational and recreational facilities include an observatory, Japanese Garden, three hole golf course, baseball diamonds, soccer fields, eighteen hole disc golf course, a prairie restoration and wildlife habitat study area, and the CedarSide Trail for walking and biking winds through the campus.

The Community

Located an easy one-hour drive from Eau Claire, UW-BC is located in the thriving community of Rice Lake.  This city of approximately 10,000 people boasts of its indoor hockey, curling and swimming facilities, and enclosed shopping mall, national retail stores, and downtown business area.

The Blue Hills recreation area, just east of Rice Lake, is an excellent location for hiking, mountain biking, fishing, snowmobiling and downhill and cross-country skiing.  To find out more about our community, click on the icon below:

Completing the Bachelor's Degree

Students at UW-BC pursue a wide variety of majors.  Among the most popular are Elementary Education, Business, Health Sciences, and Psychology.  Credits transfer to any four-year public or private college or university.  Many of our students complete degrees at the following UW campuses - Eau Claire, River Falls, Stout, and Superior - entering as juniors through the UW Guaranteed Transfer program.

Students can also stay in the area and take advantage of distance education options to earn a Bachelor's degree from one of the four baccalaureate University of Wisconsin campuses that we have partnered with (UW-Milwaukee, UW-Green Bay, UW-Superior, UW-Platteville).  To learn more click here then click on "Bachelor's Degree Options" at the top of the page.

Student Services

Staff in the Student Services Office provides assistance with admission, financial aid, placement testing, course registration, transfer planning, study skills, and career counseling.

Each student has an academic advisor who helps with the development of educational and career plans.  Assistance with course selection and transfer information is provided with the goal of enabling a smooth and successful transfer to a 4-year campus.

Tutorial services in math, writing and other subjects are available through The Learning Center located in Ritzinger Hall.

Campus Visits

UW-BC invites prospective students and their parents to visit the campus.  Special Campus Open House events and New Directions nights are held each fall and spring.  Campus Open House events are for high school students and their parents while the New Directions events focus on options available to those who want to earn a UW bachelor's degree without leaving the area.

Individual visits and campus tours are also encouraged and can be arranged through the Student Services Office.
