The ongoing, multi-dimensional crises of “3.11”—the earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear disaster that struck Japan on March 11, 2011—provide an unexpected opportunity to examine literary, cultural, and humanitarian responses to both natural and nuclear disaster in Japan. In addition to introducing students and participating community members to the historical and contemporary literature, visual culture (manga, film, anime, and art), and scholarship of disaster in Japan, this course will also give participants the opportunity to take part in a ten-day service learning project in the tsunami zone in Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture, one of the communities that was partially leveled by the tsunami.
