Piano, German, cooking are some of the short courses for October


German, cooking, and piano are some of the classes beginning offered in October at the University of Wisconsin-Barron County in Rice Lake.

Learn Piano by Chord-Easy & Fun will be offered on Saturday, Oct. 5 from 9:00 a.m. – 12 noon in the Fine Arts Building music room.  In this three hour course musicians will learn to play easy piano chords that sound great and play many different popular songs.  The class covers basic chords and some useful chord theory.  Course instructor is Jeff Gilbertson.  Registration fee is $29.

Upcycle Style Bags will meet on Tuesday evenings, October 8 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. and October 15 from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. in room 227 Ritzinger Hall.  In this class participants will learn to make an upcycled ‘green’ bag using their crocheting skills and plastic shopping bags.  Students will learn how to cut the bags in a couple of different ways for making the body of the bag and the handles along with learning how to create a flower decoration.  Course instructor is Kristi Pedersen.  Participants should bring scissors, crochet hook size J or K, and 50 grocery-sized plastic bags (40 of one color and 10 of a different color).  Cost of the course is $29.

Learn German-Fast and Fun will meet on Thursday evenings, Oct. 3, 10, 17, and 24 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. in room 227 Ritzinger Hall.  The class will focus on listening first then speaking.  Course instructor is Jeff Gilbertson who has spoken German for 25 years and lived in German speaking countries for many years.  Cost of the course is $59.

Feasting with Ancient Grain Foods – Gluten-Free Cooking will meet on Wednesday evenings, Oct. 16, 23, and 30 from 5:00 – 9:00 p.m. in the Rice Lake High School Consumer Education Room.  Ancient grains such as teff, quinoa, amaranth, wild rice and millet are nutrient dense and gluten-free.  This is a hands-on, taste-testing class.  Recipes include wild rice frittata, breakfast porridge sundaes, asparagus quinoa soup, Thai chicken fingers, and chocolate-pumpkin muffins.  Course instructor is Chris Dickman-Loew, produce and deli manager for the Main Street Market Food Cooperative in Rice Lake.  Course fee is $69 which includes materials and ingredients.
